How Can I Repair Drooping Upper Eyelids?
Drooping upper eyelids, also known as ptosis, can affect both appearance and vision. Various methods can help repair and rejuvenate the eyelids, restoring a youthful and alert look. Below, our double-board-certified facial plastic and oculoplastic surgeon, Albert Cytryn, MD, discusses different treatments to help patients make a confident and informed choice.
1. Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Upper eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a common and effective method to address drooping upper eyelids. This surgical procedure involves removing excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids while repairing the underlying muscles. The result is a more open, refreshed, and youthful eye appearance. Ptosis repair surgery can also help address vision problems caused by sagging upper eyelid skin in some patients.
2. Brow Lift Surgery
In some cases, a “heavy” brow can contribute to the appearance of drooping eyelids—even when the lids themselves retain a relatively normal structure. For these patients, Dr. Cytryn may recommend a brow lift, which elevates the position of the browline, creating a more alert and open upper face aesthetic and potentially reducing the appearance of sagging upper lids.
3. Non-Surgical Treatments
For those seeking non-surgical options, BOTOX® Cosmetic injections may be able to provide temporary improvement by lifting the brow. BOTOX® injections can also help improve the appearance of dynamic wrinkles around the eyes and forehead. That said, non-surgical modalities typically cannot directly address the underlying causes of eyelid ptosis, and the results are not as dramatic or long-lasting.
